How to tell if your sling is too small

An adorable mama sent me this picture of herself with her baby in her sling. She felt like the sling was too small and obviously from the pictures it is. You should be able to comfortably put your baby into the cradle carry until they reach 12 to 18 pounds. Once they out grow that position you will need to switch to facing out, tummy to tummy, or hip carry. The sling in this picture is an extra small and she ended up exchanging for a stretch sling in a size small.

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and Most Importantly Thank You!!

To my amazing customers who have supported my business this year - Thank You. 360 Bebe is more than a business for me it is a passion and a labor of love. Each sling is lovingly crafted for you with care as if it were to carry my own precious child.

I am supported in my business by my family -

my husband who is often lulled into sleep by the not so gentle hum of the sewing machine and who patiently waits for me when I squeeze in a Saturday sling fitting

my parents (mom, dad, Barbara) who have cut and washed fabric for me tirelessly and without pay

my patient children who have gone with me on sling visits, waited patiently for me to finish sewing, and who never complain when a sling gets sewn and new pajamas don't

my mother in law Mimi who never hesitates to say yes when I ask for babysitting and never complains when it takes me twice as long as I think

Tracy my sister in law, who has brought the 360 Bebe love to Europe

I would also especially like to thank my friends in business Erin and Angela of Austin Baby, Carolyn of Due Maternity, and Bree of Bree's Bums who have all lovingly carried their babes in 360 Bebe slings and who support my business by carrying my slings in their stores.

I look forward to all the new year has to offer. In the meantime as the swirl of the busy holidays is upon us I just ask for patience. I know some of my customers are waiting for their slings and to schedule their fittings. I promise you will be taken care of, but feel free to contact me if you have any concerns.

Austin Babywearers

Today I had the opportunity to attend my first Austin Babywearers Meeting (formerly a Nine In Nine Out Chapter). It was held at the Zolowear Offices in South Austin. It was an amazing experience . . . to see so many slinging mamas, so many mamas new to slinging and just overall to be a part of such a positive movement of moms sharing the babywearing love with other moms. I also had the honor to meet Darien and Michelle of Zolowear fame. Zolowear is what I have always considered to be the first to get slings right - to beautifully combine form, function, and style. Not to mention she also has the most comprehensive how to and learn to babywearing information available from any manufacturer. She has spent much time and energy to give moms every advantage possible to be successful with their slings.

Austin Babywearers meets every 2nd Wednesday of the month, come and go from 9:30 to 11:00. Next month's meeting will be October 10 at the Zolowear offices - 321 W Ben White Ste. 101. Available at the meetings is an extensive sling library - that allows you to check out various carriers for a month between meetings.

Mommy and Me Sale and BabyBee Basics

Twice a year the Mommy and Me Consignment Sale hosts a private baby shower for first time moms. I have had the opportunity to attend the last two as a sponsor. The most recent one was last Friday afternoon. It is a great event that provides a mountain of information to new moms and lets them shop the sale before the general public.

I just wanted to tell you about a wonderful mom I met who was also a sponsor. Her name is Bethany and she owns a company called BabyBee Basics. The first thing that caught my attention about her was the beautiful wrap she was using to carry her baby in. I asked her if it was a Metro Wrap b/c I had never seen one in person but had heard that they were very impressive. She said no that she had made it. I wish I had a picture because it was the perfect wrap for the Texas climate and it was beautiful. It was a lightweight, light colored organic looking cotton that she had embellished with a hand painted design. She and her baby looked so beautiful and her baby slept in the wrap through the entire event.

The other thing I wanted to share about Bethany is her business. She offers private in home new parent support including everything from prepared childbirth to postpartum support. Not only is she a mother of two but she is also a postpartum nurse. So tune out the well meaning friends and relatives, set aside the mountains of baby books, and get one one support, tailored to you. To find out more about her classes and pricing visit her site at www.babybasics.com

Get Help With Your Sling

Austin Babywearers meets this Wednesday, September 12, from 9:30 to 11. The location will be the Zolowear Headquarters located at 321 W Ben White Ste. 101.

This will be an opportunity to get help with any of your slings or carriers or to find out more about the different styles and types of soft carriers.

I will be there if you have any questions or specifics for me or regarding pouch style slings.

Solarveil is Here!!

My first order of Solarveil sun protectant fabric is in. I'm currently taking pre-orders for turquoise, black, and white solarveil slings. Solarveil fabric tends to stretch when its worn so it's best to go with a smaller size for a more comfortable fit.

FAQs

Here are a few of the most common questions I receive and my responses.

1. What is a fitting and why do I need one?

A fitting is an opportunity to try on a sling with my support. At a fitting I help you select the best size sling to accomodate you and your baby. The real value of a fitting is being able to learn to use your sling and ask questions about how it should feel, about whether it looks right, and to go over important safety information. I strongly recommend fittings for first time moms and first time sling users. Fittings can be done while you are pregnant but I tend to discourage it b/c I don't think you really get the full benefit. A doll cannot simulate what it feels like to hold your real baby in a sling. Not to mention that after you have your baby it will be difficult to recall anything you learned while you were pregnant. Fittings can be scheduled in your home, at my home, at the Austin Baby Store, or when I'm scheduled at local events. To schedule yours call 512.293.9304 or email emily@360bebe.com

2. How did you get started doing this?

When I was pregnant with my second child I saw a mom at MOPs wearing her baby in a sling like I'd never seen before. It was sleek, simple, and her baby looked so happy. I asked her where she got it and I went to that website (www.kangarookorner.com) and bought one. I bought the fleece adjustable pouch.

It was wonderful but there were a few problems. The first was that even though I followed the sizing info, the sling I rec'd was too big. It took me a week to realize it b/c I wasn't sure how it should fit. I called the company, they helped me over the phone and exchanged my sling for me. I wore my son all the time in that sling but as the weather became warmer the fleece became less and less practical.

So I had another sling (a solarveil ring sling also from Kangaroo Korner) that I started using. But I missed the convenience and ease of the pouch. At this point I decided I wanted another pouch but what I could afford and what I wanted were two different things so I found some basic instructions on how to make a pouch at www.sleepingbaby.net. I followed the directions and was able to have many many slings that I loved created out of fabrics that I wanted.

Everytime I wore my sling people would stop me and asked me where I bought my sling and I would proudly share that I had made it. This ofcourse planted the seed in my head to start making and selling my slings. So my good friend Stephanie and I started Little Peanut Baby Slings, which due to copy right infringement became 360 Bebe. As business grew and our lives changed Stephanie decided that running a small WAHM business was not the right fit for her and her family so I became the sole proprietor, employee, seamstress, accountant, etc. Stepanie and I are still close friends and she lets me talk her ear off about 360 Bebe so I will always consider her a part of this adventure.

So here it is almost 3 years into this business and things are steady. I have met so many amazing mothers in this job and that is the part I truly treasure. I love the creative outlet but most of all I love connecting with and supporting the amazing women who work hard to be amazing mothers. 360 Bebe is a passion for me. As long as I can continue to balance it with family life I will continue to work hard creating beautiful, simple slings and encouraging mothers to wear their babies.

3. Do you have children?

I have two boys ages 5 and 3; Jacob and Taylor. They don't always love slings but they do like it when I let them sew projects. They both made hooded towels for camp this summer and their dad helped them make no sew batman masks with left over sling fabric.

Letter from Children's Hopsital of Austin

May 11, 2007

Dear Emily,

Thank you SO much for sending a few slings our way! We are really looking forward to using them in our Neonatal ICU, Pediatric ICU and Respiratory Unit. All of these units have many long term infants on them and we hope to utilize babywearing as a way of calming our little ones. Additionally, we hope to spread the word to families about the benefits of babywearing and where they can buy your beautiful slings!

As you may or may not know, at Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas, about 60% of our patients are under the age of 3. Many of these patients have chronic illnesses and are at risk for developing attachment disorders since they are cared for by many staff memebers and their parents often cannot be at the hospital all day. Therefore, we hope to continue a relationship with you to best serve our little ones by utilizing babywearing as a means of helping these patients develop healthy attachments to their parents and just a few other primary caregivers.

Thanks again for your willingness to donate the slings for us to use! We are excited about the possibilities of starting a babywearing program and hope that you will remember us in the future for any additional donations.

Sincerely,

Julie Grassfield, CCLS, CIMI
Child Life Specialist, Sr.

Fabrics are in!!

Two new fabric shipments arrived this week and a third will be here by the end of the week. I'm so excited to sew all the new spring fabrics. Until then I have 25 new slings partially sewn and I hope to have them finished this weekend and posted to the web.

I dropped off a few new slings to the Austin Baby Store today and I also sent Bree's Bums in Dallas their first shipment. In May Due Maternity will be carrying a small selection of 360 Bebe Slings too. It is amazing to watch my business grow but my two favortie things are helping moms learn to use their slings and buying/sewing new fabric.
